CDP Report

The recent evaluation of the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) on climate and environmental reporting 2021 rewards Parma for its important role as smart city and for having distinguished itself among European cities, with an interesting and auspicious judgment for the future.

Parma has in fact demonstrated on several occasions that it knows how to deal with the climatic challenges that have arisen over the last few years, implementing various strategies of commitment to the environment. CDP's assessment was based on action data contained in the strategic plans of the Municipality of Parma, including: the action plan for mobility (SUMP), for sustainable energy and for the climate (SECAP) and for quality air (PAIR).

For example, the monitoring of energy consumption of the 2017 indicated that the Municipality of Parma managed to reduce almost the 12% of CO2 emissions compared to 2004.

This important objective was achieved through a combination of different lines of action: the redevelopment of public and private buildingsthe increase of energy production from renewable sources, improvement of the efficiency of public lighting thanks to LED lamps and the optimization of the production processes of companies.

The adaptation strategies to extreme climatic events in the municipal area also contributed to the good result of the questionnaire, aimed at contrasting the phenomenon of heat waves, floods and droughts through different actions: from planting works, to interventions for the reduction of water leaks, the development of alarm and monitoring systems made available by Arpae and the Civil Protection of the Municipality of Parma.

Even the new Territorial alliance for Carbon Neutrality of the Province of Parma has attracted the interest of CDP, qualifying itself as an example of public-private partnership for territorial carbon neutrality. Thus, on the occasion of the event All4Climate, through which the Ministry of Ecological Transition collects initiatives, ideas and debates on climate change, the Municipality of Parma was invited to present this pioneering project.

Cities and people around the world are already feeling the effects of climate change and it is particularly encouraging to see that the Municipality of Parma is committed to engaging the widest spectrum of citizens through various projects and activities aimed at accelerating awareness and knowledge of effects of climate change and to approach possible solutions ensuring their transparency.

In the analysis carried out by the CDP in 2021, Parma stands out for its leadership demonstrated in best practices in the field of adaptation and mitigation, has set ambitious but realistic objectives and has made progress towards achieving these objectives. The strategic and holistic plans implemented are a guarantee for reducing climate impacts, the vulnerabilities of citizens and businesses.
